Work your way through each row, highlighting each step as your learner achieves it. You can also highlight in red, amber and green, to show they are either working on it, can do it with support, or have achieved it. 
The row your learner is working on its their current grade, for example Level 8b, then each colums is a step towards the next level, for example Level 8a.3 if 3 of the columns are highlighted. 
Some columns have the same letter presented twice, this is so you can highlight one for reading and the other for writing.
